PALRA | Documenting Living Languages in Western Iberia SM | San Martín de Trevejo Corpus ID : 134 - 136438 The Inscription On the tower’s stone plaque (partially eroded), the inscription matches what the explanatory sign below transcribes: “ESTA OBRA ETERMINO DASER/TODA AÑOS DE DLV…/MAIORDOMO Ro MIN MAGRO…/DO Y REGIDORES FCO. FENBON/…/MAIORDOMO JOSE MATEOS” This means: “This work was finished in the year of … under mayordomo [chief steward] Rodrigo Min Magro … and regidores (councilmen) Francisco Fenbón … and mayordomo José Mateos.” It’s a typical dedication inscription marking the completion of the tower and recording the officials in charge. The “DLV” is likely a date in Roman numerals (possibly 1555, since DLV = 555, which might fit with the mid-16th century construction). The Coat of Arms The coat of arms is identified in the plaque text: It is the coat of arms of Emperor Charles V (Carlos I of Spain). It shows a two-headed eagle (the Habsburg imperial symbol). This emblem was granted to San Martín de Trevejo by the monarch, along with the motto “Muy Noble y Muy Leal” (“Very Noble and Very Loyal”), a recognition of the town’s loyalty. PALRA

The inclusion of the municipal crest emphasises institutional authority, while the bilingual layout foregrounds the local language as primary in this context. PALRA
