I took this photo because this is one of only few businesses that is actually owned by nonimmigrant family within this shopping center area. Regardless, as this brewery hosts family friendly trivia nights weekly, this place plays and important role for community engagement.

Entry to the community’s biggest and the nearest grocery shop has bilingual open signs. Along with open sign, the door also has traditional golden writing on the red paper wishing for prosperous new year. Such signs definitely reveals strong cultural tie to Chinese tradition among not only people who run the store but also its customers.

Next to the S-Mart, Chinese grocery store, Terry’s kitchen may look more American than Asian. However, Terry’s kitchen is owned third generation Japanese immigrant Terry Takeuchi. Since its opening in 2017, Terry’s kitchen has been the center of the Asian immigrant and its descendants community not only of the city of Bellevue but also of its surrounding cities such as Seattle and Renton. For example during the COVID-19 pandemic, the restaurant faced a financial challenge, yet with the support of the community through gofundme campaign it survived.

Ethnic grocery stores play an important role to engage immigrant communities. For example, at the entry, S-mart has a station for the local newspapers in Chinese language for free, which allows readers to digest the news without language barriers.

Owned and operated by Korean immigrants, Hairstudio 60 proudly displays its name also in Korean language. According to locals, such bilingual sign directly impact them to trust their service since Korea has well known for its high beauty standard. Furthermore, having an Asian hair dresser who understands how to take care of Asian straight hair within the community helps Asian immigrants to keep their beauty standard and have more confidence in their appearance

The sign sets up the boundary for the residential area mostly filled up with single housing. It is across the street from the rental apartments and condos. I personally find it quite interesting that single houses are zoned for residential area where drivers are required to drive less than 25mph versus apartments across the street that is more densely populated is zoned as commercial with more main roads and higher speed cars.

The image is the former main office of Jing Mei Elementary School. Unfortunately, in the school year of 2024-25, the school was moved to the Wilburton Elementary School building that was newly built in 2018 and abandoned its former building in Newport Hill. Even though the school sign is completely removed, at the front side of the main office, we can find some signs referring to its main office, student drop off zone, as well as school zone signs.
In the beginning of the 2024, the relocation of the Jing Mei Elementary School that is fully immersed Mandarin-English dual lingual public school into more desired location that is closer to the city center brought up many political conflicts as it forces Wilburton Elementary School to be dissolved. Many parents of Wilburton ES speculated that rich Asian (mostly Chinese) donors lobbied its relocation for their advantage and boycotted outside of Wilburton ES and Bellevue School Districts days and days. Yet, the relocation proceeded as planned. Regardless of its political conflicts, Jing Mei ES’s relocation was a clear indicator of growing Asian immigrant population in city of Bellevue. Unfortunately, for Newport Hill community, it reminds the shift even within its Asian descendant residents.
